I have been impressed recently by a simple description of a habit in Jesus’s life that has often been overlooked in teaching and preaching about Him in my Protestant Evangelism experience:
"Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Lk 5:16 NIV)."
It was a holy habit of Jesus's life to step away from the noise and hurry of the world around Him to offer the Father His full attention and hear His voice of love, affirmation and invitation. As followers of Jesus, might He not extend an invitation to us to follow His example here?
I've found that one helpful resource in engaging this rhythm of Jesus's life has been places specially set aside for the purpose of withdrawal or "retreat." We've developed a downloadable resource listing dozens of retreat centers here in Southern California where we're based. Whether you live in the region, or hope to visit this area in the near future, I hope that you'll find a place where you might respond to the invitation of Jesus to join Him in a quiet, solitary place to listen to the Father and share your heart with Him.
